FIREWORKS SEASON
The weather is getting colder, and with it, we are set to enjoy the firework season. Unfortunately, most of the time our four legged friends are less likely to enjoy the beautiful light shows, and instead will be more focused on the confusingly loud explosions that accompany them.
If your dog experiences a fear of fireworks, we have put together a few tips to hopefully help prepare them the best we can for this seasons antics.
GET THEM USED TO THE SOUNDS AHEAD OF TIME
One of the best ways to encourage your dogs to get used to the loud noises is to desensitise them ahead of time. Desensitising is the process of slowly introducing noises, objects or experiences to your dog to make them less scary when they are confronted with them in future. This is something we do here at Paws Perfect with our Puppy Intros, introducing puppies to gentle driers and clipper sounds at a young age! The Medivet Group has created this handy guide on the best way to desensitise your dog to fireworks
INVEST IN A HAPPY HOODIE (SOCK IF YOUR DOG IS SMALL!)
Happy hoodies are again something we use at Paws Perfect to protect the more nervous dogs from the noises produced by the high velocity driers that we use. They can also be used to help muffle the noises produced by fireworks. If you don't want to invest in a happy hoodie, and your dog is small enough, you could also create something similar by chopping the end off of an old sock to create the same snood shape. Please ensure your dog is being observed at all times whilst wearing this if they are a risk of chewing and ingesting the fabric.
CREATE A SAFE SPACE FOR THEM
Creating a safe space for your dog to hide away, that is in a quieter area of your house, with all their bedding and blankets, may help them feel safer when the fireworks start. It may also be a good idea to play some music or the TV on to help drown out the noise. It's best, if possible, to stay in with your dog if you feel that may be overly nervous during this time.
TRY A CALMING SUPPLEMENT/PLUG IN
There are plenty of great supplements you can buy over the counter that can help with calming your dog if they are nervous. These include handy plug-ins for dogs that aren't so great at taking tablets. Many of these have to be used in advance of the date of the fireworks so its best to check before giving them to get maximum effectiveness.
IF YOUR DOG IS VERY NERVOUS: SPEAK TO YOUR VET ABOUT MEDICATION
If you find that your dog is especially afraid during the firework season (usually categorised by excessive drooling, panting, shaking and panicking) it may be best to speak with your vet about the possibility of medication to help keep them calm during this time.
OUR CHARITY WASHATHON 2024
This August we held our first annual Charity Washathon in aid of Forest Dog Rescue. The day was packed with fresh washed wagging tails, tasty food and interesting talks. We would love to thank all those who were able to attend including the amazing local businesses that joined us on the day (they will be included at the end of this if you wanted to check them out!
We raised a grand total of £566!
It was such a success that we are already planning on doing it again next year, if you'd like to join us then watch this space and we will keep you updated nearer the date! Equally if you are a small business and would like to get involved please pop us an email to pawsperfectsalon@gmail.com.
